Almost everyone points ChatGPT at writing posts, so we use it somewhere far less crowded: leaving genuinely thoughtful comments on other people's posts. The whole strategy rests on how the LinkedIn feed works. When a first degree connection comments on or likes a post, that post shows up in your feed even though the author is only a second degree connection, so a comment on a large account puts you in front of an audience you did not have to build. If you have a small account, or your own posts are not getting reach yet, you get the prompt, the editing pass, and a repeatable way to decide who to comment on each day, all tied back to Gary Vaynerchuk's dollar eighty idea: add your two cents rather than saying great post.
What you will learn
- Why commenting beats posting when your following is small: creating content takes time and thought, while a comment on a post that already has attention borrows the eyeballs that are already there.
- The feed mechanic the whole strategy depends on, shown live: a second degree connection's post appears in our feed only because a first degree connection engaged with it.
- The prompt itself: respond to this LinkedIn post in a casual tone, followed by the link to the post. The casual tone line is what we landed on after a lot of testing, and it is what makes the comment feel better.
- Our editing pass: cut the canned opener (great post, first name) and the canned closer (thanks for sharing your insights), then break the comment up so it is readable in the feed.
- The second prompt variation that ends with a question, and why a question pulls the author and other readers into replying to you instead of just scrolling past.
- How we keep track: like the post so we know we already commented, then save the person to a Sales Navigator lead list so we have a standing set of accounts to work through.
- How to find posts worth commenting on: search a hashtag for your topic, sort by posts, set it to top match and date posted in the past week. We aim for 10 to 20 comments a day.
