The bottleneck on LinkedIn is that a message normally requires a connection first, which caps how many real conversations you can start in a week. There are three ways around it, and none of them need the other person to accept anything first: InMails sent to open profiles, messages to fellow members of a group, and messages to people attending the same event. We cover how each one works, what it costs, and the volume each allows, because the limits are different in every case and that is where accounts get into trouble.
What you will learn
- How open profiles work: a paying member carries a gold LinkedIn badge, and if that person left the open profile setting on, the message window says free to open profile and no credit is spent.
- The credit math behind InMails: a premium subscription gives roughly 10 to 50 credits a month, anything beyond that costs 10 dollars per message, unused credits stockpile for up to three months, and a spent credit comes back if the person replies.
- The monthly ceiling of 800 InMails, and why we save real credits for the highest value targets and lean on open profiles for the volume.
- How to message through groups: search a topic, sort by Groups, request to join, open the member list of a group you belong to, then search inside it for the exact title you want. In one 37,000 member pharmacy group that meant filtering down to certified pharmacy technicians.
- How to message through events: mark yourself as attending, then read the attendee list by title and company and message anyone worth a conversation, the way we did with a 269 person event.
- What the first message should do in both cases: stay light and ask about the group or why they signed up for the event. The recipient has to accept the message before the thread continues, so the job of message one is a reply, not a pitch.
- The one place LinkedIn caps volume: group and event messages. We keep it to about 50 in a sitting and split 50 to 100 a day across two sessions, while first degree messages have no cap and InMails are limited only by that monthly 800.
